Hi, I’m Courtney.
I combine my extensive experience in higher education with the principles and tools of instructional design to produce high quality, engaging learning experiences.
My interest in instructional technology began as an effort to improve my own teaching, and has grown into advanced study and a career shift.
My Approach
Designing for how we learn
Fields like neuroscience, educational research, and learning sciences have greatly advanced our understanding of how humans process new information, create meaning out of that information, and incorporate it into our existing body of knowledge--In other words, how we learn. I believe in an eclectic approach to designing learning experiences that incorporates lessons from all these fields to teach in a way that our brains learn best.
Tapping into motivation
Grades and rewards can be short-term performance motivators for many learners, but when it comes to long-term learning and fulfilling educational experiences, genuine curiosity and intrinsic motivation are the gold standard. Uncovering how to promote this in learners can sometimes be difficult, but it is highly worthwhile. Connecting course content to existing interests and experiences improves satisfaction for both teachers and learners, all while improving learning outcomes.
Empowering learners
I want to empower individuals to take ownership of their own learning. When we combine genuine curiosity with skillful guidance, we are setting students up for success. My role, both as an educator and an instructional designer, is to facilitate this process by providing the tools, guidance, and supportive environment needed for meaningful and authentic learning to take place.
